Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start my custom jewelry design project?

The highest priority at KM Jewelry Design is creating the jewelry that tells your story. Use this intake form to provide your details and to walk through the personalized jewelry design process: Start Your KM Jewelry Design Process.

How long will my jewelry order take?

Standard production time for custom jewelry design pieces is 4-6 weeks. If you need your piece sooner, please note the date you need your piece by on your design questionnaire and I will be in touch to let you know if that date is achievable.

Is it safe to ship my jewelry design order?

Yes, it’s safe to ship your order. All pieces are packaged and shipped with the utmost of care and come insured for the full value with your order.

Can you redesign my heirloom jewelry?

Absolutely! I love redesigning heirloom jewelry and the added meaning behind each piece! We can combine several inherited stones into a single brand new custom jewelry design or split them up to create multiple pieces to share amongst family.

Can you reuse old gold to make new jewelry pieces?

When redesigning heirloom jewelry, I always use any diamonds and/or precious stones for the new design, however, reusing gold is not necessarily an option. Re-casting old gold doesn't mean cost savings as the process for melting and recasting is problematic and labor intensive.

Most jewelry is made of 10k, 14k, or 18k gold and is not 100% gold as 24k (pure) gold is soft and does not hold up well to everyday wear. Any gold less than 24k is alloyed (mixed) with other metals. Each of those metals have different melting points, which makes melting unpredictable.

Furthermore when old gold is melted down, the soldering agents from any previous sizing and stone setting gets mixed in, causing porosity (weakness) in the metal.

The good news is that any diamonds and precious gems can be removed to create a new custom jewelry design in any metal you would like!

What can I do with my old gold ?

I recommend keeping any diamonds and/or precious gems from your piece and selling your old gold to a refinery. I work with a refiner that buys old gold. I will get you the best price possible on your old gold and apply that amount to your custom jewelry redesign. Plus, you will still have all those special diamonds and/or gems in your new custom jewelry design!

The simple answer is no. Many couples are now going a less traditional route and choosing colored gem stones as a center stone for their engagement rings. I personally chose a Red Spinel for my ring! If you want color, we'll add color!

What is a custom cut gemstone?

A custom cut gemstone is faceted by a professional lapidary one at a time with precision and care to get the best results from the gemstone rough in terms of size, clarity, and light refraction (sparkle!).

Some gemstone designers create their own facet patterns for a truly custom effect.
